Media Invited to Preview First-of-its-Kind Public Art Installation at Airport Rental Car Center
Black and White E-Panels Create Complex Designs, Animations
What: The media is invited to preview DAZZLE, a first-of-its kind permanent public art project being installed directly onto the façade of the airport’s Rental Car Center. The artwork features 2,100 “e-paper” tiles, similar to the technology found in handheld e-readers but adapted for use on a much larger architectural scale. The tiles are controlled by a computer and change from black to white, creating complex designs and animations. The artwork is 1,600 linear feet and powered by sunlight.
When: Friday, June 2, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m
Where: The event will be on the northeast side of the Rental Car Center, 3355 Admiral Boland Way, San Diego, CA, 92101, facing Pacific Highway.
– Artist Nikolaus Hafermaas of artist team Ueberall International
– Airport Arts Program staff
– Paul Apen, Chief Strategy Officer for E Ink Corporation and core project collaborator
Why: There is nothing like DAZZLE anywhere in the world. The installation and testing, visible from Pacific Highway, has drawn quite a bit of interest from passers-by. San Diego International Airport wanted to give local media a preview so they can tell their audiences about this innovative and highly original artwork.
Parking: Media parking is available in the vendor parking area. From Sassafras, turn right on Admiral Boland Way, and take your first right just past the Rental Car Center. Angled vendor parking is on your right just past the red and white MetroGnomes sculpture.
